On June 12, 2016, as many of us did, I awakened to the news of a mass shooting in an Orlando, Gay nightclub on latino night. It was a devastating moment. As the day progressed, I found myself grief stricken. Later that morning, I was supposed to play at a street fair in Oakland. Heading to the show, I passed by a Baptist church and heard the choir singing. I felt compelled to enter and when I did, I hit the floor, sobbing.
Every tragedy matters to me and mostly, I am in a constant state of awareness of the world and the spectrum between beauty and pain. There is both, always.
Orlando felt personal to me. It could have been me. It could have been any number of people I know. My spiritual response was to write a piece of music. What came out was “One People”. Thank you for listening. Long live the Queers.
